Conservatory Blinds

Conservatory blinds are a major consideration for a new or existing conservatory not least from the cost point of view. It is vital to maintain a consistent temperature in a conservatory to extract the maximum benefit. If like me, you have lived in a property with a poorly insulated conservatory with basic window treatments, then you will understand what I mean. It is very frustrating to have a room that is either like an oven during the day in summer or needs extra heating in the winter to make it habitable.

It may surprise some people but the cost of dressing a conservatory can often match the cost of the conservatory itself. Although, not likely, the fact is it is a potentially expensive business. The blinds are no exception and can be one of the most expensive items. Therefore it is important the right choice is made. As mentioned, a common problem with conservatories is that they are too hot in summer and too cold in winter and cost a fortune in air conditioning in summer and heating in winter. It is odd that having made the effort of allowing streams of light into a structure by constructing it largely from glass, that great time and expense goes into blocking the light out. However, blinds are absolutely necessary for maintaining a comfortable lighting, pleasant temperature and avoiding privacy. Also, the light can damage precious conservatory furniture, destroy plants and cause general discomfort. Also, in winter, conservatories are liable to get very cold as the heat escapes through the un-insulated walls and roof. It these ecologically aware times, it is unforgivable to be allowing the heat to just seep out when it can be easily prevented.

It is the summer that causes most problems as heat and light become a problem. The heat is often exaggerated as well as many conservatories adjoin the kitchen with the purpose of being utilised as dining rooms. Solar blinds which reflect heat in the summer and retain it in the winter are increasingly popular.

Conservatory blinds, therefore, are not just decorative, but play an important part making a conservatory function properly and realise their obvious potential. Whilst the decision to install blinds is the easy one to make, the choice of style and type of blind is much harder. There are three main types :- pinoleum or roman blinds, pleated blind and increasingly popular roller blind. These all come in a huge array of colours and styles. Also, you can choose to have remote controlled or automatic so they adjust to the temperature and glare. Many conservatories are overlooked by neighbours, so privacy is another reason for having blinds.

We have outlined some of the important factors to consider when choosing your blinds. We hope that you do as much research as you can and talk to retailers and acquaintances about their choice of blinds.
